Cel mai rapid înotător al planetei în 2022, David Popovici s-a impus fără drept de apel în finala de la 100 m liber din cadrul Campionatelor Europene de înot care se desfășoară zilele acestea la Belgrad, în Serbia, cu o lună și șase zile înainte de startul Jocurilor Olimpice Paris 2024.
David a întors al doilea la 50 m, după ungurul Nandor Nemeth, dar a zburat spre victorie pe ultimii 50 m fiind singurul finalist care a încheiat cursa sub 47 secunde - 46.88 s, la 0,08 secunde de recordul mondial 46.80. Maghiarul a terminat la doilea cu timpul 47.49 s, iar pe locul 3 a încheiat reprezentantul gazdelor Andrej Barna (47.66 s).
Pentru David, participarea la aceste Europene este o bună etapă de verificare înaintea competiției olimpice unde are ca obiectiv cel puțin o medalie în probele de 100 și 200 m liber în care va lua startul.
Înotătorul antrenat de Adrian Rădulescu și-a trecut în palmares la Belgrad cel de-al treilea titlu european din carieră, după medaliile de aur cucerite la 100 și 200 m liber la Europenele de la Roma, din 2022.
Pentru restul componenților delegației României, CE de natație de la Belgrad constituie șansa de a obține baremurile de calificare olimpică.

Update: David Popovici şi-a confirmat statutul de mare favorit al probelor de 100 şi 200 m liber şi a cucerit AURUL şi în finala de la 200 m liber.

David Popovici, double European champion in Belgrade, in the 100 and 200 m freestyle
The fastest swimmer on the planet in 2022, David Popovici, overshadowed the 100 m freestyle final at the European Swimming Championships taking place in Belgrade, Serbia, just one month and six days before the start of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
David turned second at the 50 m mark, behind Hungarian Nandor Nemeth, but flew to victory in the last 50 meters, being the only finalist to finish the race under 47 seconds - 46.88 seconds, just 0.08 seconds away of the world record of 46.80. The Hungarian finished second with a time of 47.49 seconds, while the host country's representative, Andrej Barna, finished third with 47.66 seconds.
For David, participating in these European Championships is a good stage for preparation before the Olympic competition, where he aims to win at least one medal in the 100 and 200 m freestyle events in which he will compete.
The swimmer, trained by Adrian Rădulescu, added his third European title to his record in Belgrade, following the gold medals he won in the 100 and 200 m freestyle at the European Championships in Rome in 2022.
For the rest of the Romanian delegation, the European Championships in Belgrade is a chance to achieve the Olympic qualifying standards.
