Cel mai rapid înotător al planetei la 100 m liber, David Popovici a reușit să își asigure prezența la Jocurile Olimpice Paris 2024 după ce a câștigat finala națională a probei regină -100 m liber, unde deține titlul și recordul mondial.
La ediția din acest an a Campionatelor Naționale de natație de la Otopeni, prima competiție la care a participat ca senior, David a fost imbatabil în lupta pentru medalii de la100 m liber și cu timpul 47.61 secunde, sub baremul de calificare olimpic (48.34), a obținut biletele pentru Paris 2024.
David Popovici, antrenat de Adrian Rădulescu și legitimat la CS Dinamo București, a cucerit la competiția națională nu mai puțin de șase titluri, la 50, 100, 200, 400 m liber, 100 m spate și 50 m future, la aceasta din urmă stabilind și un nou record național.
David este al doilea sportiv al Team Romania care și-a îndeplinit baremul de calificare pentru JO Paris 2024, după atleta Delvine Relin Meringor (maraton).
David Popovici a obținut primele medalii olimpice în întrecerile juniorilor din cadrul Festivalului Olimpic al Tineretului European de la Baku, în 2019 – aur la 100 m liber și argint la 50 și 200 m liber. A uimit apoi lumea, după ce, încă junior, a cucerit aurul la 100 și 200 m liber la mondialele și europenele de seniori.
În 2021, la Jocurile Olimpice Tokyo 2020, a fost la un pas de podium în proba de 200 m liber, unde în finală a ocupat locul 4.

The fastest swimmer on the planet in the 100m freestyle, David Popovici managed to secure his presence at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games after winning the national final of the queen -100m freestyle, where he holds the title and the world record.
At this year's edition of the National Swimming Championships in Otopeni, the first competition he participated in as a senior, David was unbeatable in the fight for medals in the 100m freestyle and with a time of 47.61 seconds, below the Olympic qualification standard (48.34), got the tickets for Paris 2024.
David Popovici, coached by Adrian Rădulescu and registered at CS Dinamo Bucharest, won no less than six titles at the national competition, in 50, 100, 200, 400 m freestyle, 100 m backstroke and 50 m butterfly, in the latter establishing and a new national record.
David is the second athlete of Team Romania to meet the qualification criteria for the Paris 2024 Olympics, after the athlete Delvine Relin Meringor (marathon).
David Popovici won his first Olympic medals in the junior events of the European Youth Olympic Festival in Baku in 2019 – gold in the 100m freestyle and silver in the 50m and 200m freestyle. He then stunned the world after, still a junior, winning gold in the 100 and 200 m freestyle at the senior world and European championships.
In 2021, at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, he was one step away from the podium in the 200 m freestyle, where he finished 4th in the final.
